Welcome to the Third through Fifth Grades at Nativity School The intermediate years for your child, grades three through five, represents a time of significant growth. During these years the children take on a greater responsibility for their own learning. We help our children during these years to grow academically, spiritually and socially. Parents play an important role in assisting our students with the learning process by assisting with homework and helping them to become organized.
The spiritual emphasis in third grade is on the Church as a community. The students come to know our role and responsibility in the Catholic Church The students are introduced to many new and exciting concepts including: cursive writing, multiplication and division. Critical thinking skills and oral and written expression are developed through the use of a reading textbook and a variety of quality literature. Science and social studies develop new meaning through hands-on experiences. Several theme projects are covered in third grade: the human body, mealworms, globes, Africa , and biographies. Some traditional highlights of third grade include: Word of the Day, Grandparents Day Mass, Fun in the Sun Day and a field trip to the Minnesota History Center . The development of independent work habits is stressed. Students receive daily homework and it is their responsibility to see that it is completed and returned each day. The students will also complete at least one long-term project. These expectations will help develop self-discipline and solid study habits. Presenting Our Fourth Grade Program
Fourth grade is an exciting and challenging year where students become more independent and responsible for their own learning. Teachers' high expectations allow students to strive for excellence in all areas. The emphasis in the fourth grade religion program is on the Beatitudes, The Ten Commandments, and our role as Christians in our world. In fourth grade students will expand language arts skills through a literature-based program with an emphasis on speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Students further develop computation and problem solving strategies in grade four mathematics. An expanded emphasis on the content areas of social studies and science is developed through projects and hands-on experiences. The development of independent work habits and organizational skills are stressed through homework assignments with an increased emphasis on long-term projects. Some of the highlights of this year include: a variety of field trips related to our curriculum; the fourth grade plays, the writing of autobiographies, our fourth grade liturgy and expressing creativity through writing stories and books. Presenting Our Fifth Grade Program
Fifth grade is filled with new experiences and responsibilities as the students prepare for the middle school years. The students continue to develop study habits and the self-discipline to fulfill the expectations at this grade level. The goal of the religion program is to help the students deepen their love of God and their understanding of the Sacraments. The curriculum challenges the students through a variety of short and long-term projects. Our reading program combines a literature-based textbook, trade books, and independent reading which provide the foundation for the students' creative writing. In mathematics, the students are encouraged to develop problem solving strategies and sharpen computation skills. Each student has the opportunity to explore the world of science through hands-on learning experiences. Together the students unlock the treasures of our country's past in social studies. Some of the year's highlights include: School Patrol Service, Snug-as a-Bug Day, the Mary Shower, and a variety of field trips related to our curriculum. |
