Welcome to Our Kindergarten through Second Grade Programs

Welcome to the beginning of your child’s elementary learning experience. The primary years, kindergarten through second grade, are a critical time in your child’s development. Each day is filled with excitement as the world of learning comes alive for our youngest students. We invite you to become actively involved in the learning process by reading each night and practicing spelling and math facts with your child.

Kindergarten is a transitional year which eases children into a social and academic setting. Our goal for each child is to develop positive self-esteem, confidence and a desire for learning. Nativity School offers full day and half-day kindergarten programs. The children in both programs follow the same curriculum so as to prepare them for their first grade experience.

Our religion program centers around the Children's Bible, paraliturgies and service projects. The students will learn that they are all special individuals created and loved unconditionally by God.

Students will learn to identify the alphabet, numbers and letter sounds through literature and thematic units. They will explore science and math through hands-on experiences. The children are introduced to manuscript printing and journal writing. The students will participate in three specialist classes including: physical education, library and music.

The children will participate in field trips supporting the arts, our science and social studies curriculum.

Parents and members of our Nativity community enrich our program with frequent visits to the classroom. The students love to have guests read to them!

Welcome to the World of Reading! First grade is a year filled with many new challenges. Our goal is for each student to develop written and oral language skills and to become problem solvers who can look at our world critically.

In first grade we encourage our students' academic and spiritual development. Students learn that God, Our Creator, made each person special and that Jesus, the Son of God, is our friend and brother.

The students are taught reading through a phonetic approach with a focus on developing a love of reading through literature. In mathematics the students use manipulatives and develop problem solving strategies. Task completion and the development of independent work habits are stressed across the curriculum.

Some of the highlights of the year include: a visit to the Apple Orchard, a Native American Unit including building the Plymouth Village , our liturgies, and units on Whales, Space and Eric Carle.

First grade is an exciting and challenging experience as we lay the foundation for future years of learning here at Nativity.

Second grade is a very special year. The students come to a greater knowledge of themselves and their relationship with God through the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion.

One of our goals is to instill an enthusiasm for reading. This is accomplished by escalating student reading levels through the continuous development of phonics, extensive exposure to literature, and creative writing. Each student will have the opportunity to develop their imagination and writing skills through stories, journals, and poetry.

A hands-on approach is used to introduce new math concepts in second grade. The traditional math curriculum is balanced with an emphasis on different problem solving strategies. The students experience a global perspective through units on Australia , Native Americans, and the ocean/animal life around the world.

Second grade begins the transition of becoming more responsible learners. This is achieved through weekly homework assignments, more independent classroom work, and growth in self-discipline. Second grade is a well-rounded year filled with many opportunities.
