Sacramental Experiences at Nativity of Our Lord School

Preparation for all sacraments is incorporated into the religion curriculum at the respective grade levels. Parents play an important role in supporting the teachers in preparing their children to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation. The parents are invited to a meeting with our pastor, Fr. Patrick
Hipwell, to learn more about their roles and responsibilities in helping their child prepare for these special occasions.

First Reconciliation

Students in second grade spend the second quarter preparing for their first Reconciliation. The focus for the sacrament is on the unconditional love of God and his desire to forgive us when we are truly sorry and ask for His forgiveness. We use the story of the Good Shepherd to help the children understand the depth of God’s love for each of us.

First Communion

Students in second grade spend the second half of the school year preparing for their First Communion. They learn about the elements of the liturgy and the sacrifice of the Mass. They receive their First Holy Communion as a class at a special Mass on a Saturday in late April surrounded by their families.

Confirmation

Students in grade seven begin to prepare for their Confirmation during the second half of the school year. They are instructed in the doctrine of the Church and further develop their own faith life as they prepare for this important sacrament. In the fall of their eighth grade year the students have a special retreat and prayer vigil before being Confirmed at the St. Paul Cathedral.
